Anyone can try Causal Map for free, for an unlimited period! Use is limited to 50 links, great for small files or a demo. Once you start coding more than that, you will need to select from three paid packages which are based on the number of files you want to work on – from a single file, to unlimited.
We recommend that you first of all set up a free account to try the app out.
For most purposes you will probably want to code more than 50 links in your file: Once the app tells you that you have reached your limit, click on the Subscribe button in your chosen subscription option below to make payment.
When asked for an email address for the payment, make sure you use the same address as you do to log in at the app, so that the app recognises your account!

The Small package allows you to code one project of unlimited size.

The Medium package allows you to code up to 3 files of unlimited size. At the same time, you can continue to create and use as many free files (up to 50 links) as you like.

With the Unlimited package there is no limit to the number of files you can create of any size. You also get additional 1:1 support to help you make the most of the app’s features.

Here's some more information about the different packages: All packages are available either on a monthly or annual basis. If you are likely to use Causal Map for more than 5 months in a year, then the annual option is a better option. Archived files: In addition to the file(s) covered by your subscription, you can have any number of archived files. Archived files can be viewed (but not edited) by yourself or anyone you have shared them with. Once a file has been archived, it cannot be unarchived, but you can download it as an Excel file. Archived files are not counted towards your subscription. So if you have for example a Small subscription with one file, and then archive it, you are then free to create another file. In most cases, the app will prevent you from doing anything which would exceed your subscription. However if you do get into a situation where you are exceeding your subscription at any time (e.g. because you downgrade from Medium to Small), all of your files become read-only. You can still view the files, and others with view permission can continue to view, and you can edit other people’s files you have edit access to, and most importantly you can delete or archive files in order to recover your status. Viewing other files: any user including free uses can view (but not edit) any file which has been shared with them by the creator of the file. Only files which you created count towards your subscription. It is not possible to change the creator of a file. Once your subscription comes to an end you will revert to a free account. Your files will be archived: you can see them, for 12 months, but will no longer be able to edit them. If you have a free subscription, files will be deleted after 12 months so make sure you used the export button to download your data into an Excel file. 1:1 support is only available for Unlimited subscription holders. Other users can use the support available via The Guide and the Learning Hub. Please report any bugs via the Report a Bug function in the app. If you want to bulk buy single accounts, for example educational institutions, please get in touch. We also offer a student discount.

*AI coding uses the OpenAI API, which is expensive. The more you code, the more it costs.
Autocoding is free for reasonable use, which we count as 100K characters or about 200 pages of A4 per month.
For the Gold package, we will cover the cost of reasonable use as part of your subscription.
If your usage exceeds that we will charge you for the excess.

*If you plan to do a lot of coding, we advise you to use your own OpenAI API key (this option is available in our Platinum package).
API Key is a unique code which means that you pay OpenAI directly for your usage. Their rates are cheaper than ours. This can cut your costs significantly if you are using the AI a lot.
Of course, you can still use our own API key if you don't have one or don't want to use yours.
Our autocoding API typically runs smoothly with a 99% uptime. However, if you encounter a timeout, it’s likely an issue on OpenAI’s side, which is out of our hands.
